If you drive your Mercedes Sprinter in muddy, dirty, or salty conditions, debris can get stuck in the running board mechanism. This can cause noise or make it hard for the running boards to move.
To clean your running boards:
- Manually deploy the running boards by opening the door and placing your foot on the step. Keep firm pressure on the step while you close the door. This will leave the running boards in the deployed position.
- Use a pressure washer to clean the front and rear linkages, which are the four hinge points for your PowerSteps. Avoid spraying the motors directly.
- After washing, apply silicone spray (dry film lubricant) to all four linkage arms and all pivot pins. Some of the pivot pins will be located up high on the linkage arm.
- Cycle the door to work the lubrication into the hinge points.
Do not apply silicone, wax, or protectants like Armor All® to the running board. Do not lubricate with any greases, oils, WD-40, or penetrants.
You should clean your running boards periodically, or when you notice that debris is trapped in the mechanism.

- If you live in a climate with heavy snowfall, you should also clean the snow and ice off of your running boards after every storm.
