How to use the TOMbag Reusable Garbage Bag:

LINE YOUR BIN.
Line your kitchen tidy bin (or other suitable bin) with your TOMbag reusable garbage bag. Use the top inner layer to cover your bin’s brim and secure tightly using the cord stopper.

BUSINESS AS USUAL.
Hey, it’s a garbage bag, fill it with your household trash as normal.
Pro tip: You can separate food scraps for composting or wrap it in old newspapers.

TIP YOUR TRASH.
Once full, use the inner layer cord tie to tighten your TOMbag reusable garbage bag closed. Take your full bag to your main bin, and open and empty the garbage holding one side of the top handle and the bottom handle. A couple of shakes and you’re done.

REUSE BAG.
Take your TOMbag reusable garbage bag back to your home or office to be reused again. And again. (you get the idea).

WASH and REUSE.
Depending on how many people are in your household and your garbage disposal habits (if you compost or wrap food scraps), you can wipe down or wash in your washing machine (cold water, line dry) as needed.

Reusable bags have primarily focused on solving the single-use shopping bag problem. However, till now, consumers have had no real solution for replacing single-use garbage bin liners.

In many countries, including Australia, the government and industry have introduced policies to ban single-use plastic bags and make consumers pay for reusable plastic shopping bags. These efforts have had a definite decrease in the use of single-use plastic bags for shopping. However, when single-use plastic bags were given for free in the past by retailers, many consumers reused these bags as garbage bags at home. This was a habit formed and repeated for decades.

And as old habits die hard, new reusable plastic bags offered for a small fee by retailers are now used by many consumers as garbage bin liners. The problem is that new plastic bags are 10 times thicker than their predecessors and need to be used more than 4 times to be more sustainable. They also take up to 10,000 years to degrade in landfills. They therefore pose a much bigger threat to our environment.

Utilizing thicker plastic bags as garbage bin liners is not the only negative consequence of single-use bag plastic bans. A few research studies suggested that after such bans were in place, there has been a substantial increase in the purchase of single-use plastic garbage bags. The problem of single-use plastic bags thus continues.

Here at TOMbag, we are passionate about solving this escalating problem by bringing to the world a reusable garbage bag alternative.

How to care for your new TOMbag Reusable Garbage Bag:

Cleaning your TOMbag reusable bin liner is easy. You won’t need to clean it every day. When required, simply wipe down the inner lining with a damp soapy cloth or sponge. You can also opt to wash your TOMbag in a washing machine – use the cold 15-minute cycle (no detergent required). To dry, you can line dry your TOMbag or put in your dryer on the no heat or low heat setting for approximately 5 mins or so until dry.

What are TOMbag reusable garbage bags?
TOMbag is a reusable garbage bag upcycled from 100% recycled PET plastic bottles. Our reusable garbage bags come in two sizes – small and large – designed to fit any small, medium, or large bin in your home or office to replace single-use garbage bin liners. Our reusable bin liners can be used for both your general waste, compost, and for your recycling waste.

Why do I need a reusable garbage bag?
Single-use plastic bags including plastic garbage bags are one of the major pollutants in the world contaminating our soil, water, air, and bodies. In Australia, we throw away over 5 billion plastic bags each year. By replacing single-use plastic garbage bags with the TOMbag reusable garbage bag, you will stop adding plastic waste into our environment and help decrease the effects of climate change.

What is the size and capacity of TOMbag reusable garbage bags?
TOMbag comes in two different sizes – small and large.

Large Size:

The large size is 60cm x 70cm and is designed to fit a large kitchen tidy bin or smaller. The large reusable bin liner capacity is 35 liters. Please refer to the sizing guide to the right to see if the large size is suitable for your bin type.

Small Size:

The small size is 48cm x 46cm and is designed to fit a small to medium-sized bin. The small reusable bin liner capacity is 18 liters. Please refer to the sizing guide to the right to see if the small size is suitable for your bin type.

What size garbage bin is TOMbag reusable garbage bag designed for?
We offer a number of different-size reusable bin liners to suit both consumer and business needs. On our website, we have a large (35L) TOMbag that is designed to fit the most commonly used garbage bin in the home or office, a (medium to large) kitchen tidy bin. See our sizing guide to ensure the large TOMbag reusable bin liner will fit your bin. We also have a small (18L) TOMbag reusable bin liner. See the sizing guide to see if this size is suitable for your home or office. Customers can use a TOMbag reusable garbage bag for a number of use cases including general waste, recycling waste, and compost (organic waste).

How do I clean the TOMbag reusable garbage bags?
There is a number of ways you can clean your TOMbag reusable bin liner. If the inner lining is not that dirty, you can take a soapy damp cloth and wipe it down. Another way to clean is to add some soapy water inside the reusable garbage bag and shake it around then tip out the water. Repeat until clean. TOMbag reusable garbage bags are also machine washable. Simply set your washing machine to a quick rinse setting (15mins) to wash. Then dry it outside or simply wipe down and reuse it again.

How often should I wash my TOMbag reusable garbage bag?
You can wash your TOMbag reusable bin liner every 2-7 days depending on what waste you put inside it.

Is TOMbag reusable garbage bag leakproof?
Absolutely. TOMbag is 100% waterproof meaning it will never leak garbage waste all over your floors like single-use plastic garbage bags do.

What does it mean that TOMbag is a social enterprise?
A social enterprise or social business is defined as a business that has specific social objectives that serve its primary purpose. Social enterprises seek to maximize profits while maximizing benefits to society and the environment. TOMbag is a registered social enterprise in Australia with the social enterprise council of NSW and ACT (SECNA).

How many TOMbag reusable garbage bags do I need?
This depends on how many people are in your home or office, how many kitchen tidy bins you use, and your garbage management habits (if you compost food scraps, for example). TOMbag reusable bin liners can be used for both your general waste garbage bin and your recycling waste garbage bin. In most cases, buying 2-4 should be enough for most households. This will allow you to replace your reusable garbage bag every 2-7 days with a new one and at the same time allow you to wipe down or wash 2 reusable garbage bags together in the same cycle.

What material are TOMbag reusable garbage bags made from?
Each bag is made from 100% certified recycled plastic PET bottles (rPET). We use rPET as it takes away from the existing plastic waste from our oceans and waterways and repurposes it enabling you to make a positive impact towards reversing climate change.

What to do with a TOMbag reusable garbage bag once it reaches its end of life?
We strive towards zero waste and are currently investigating potential partners in Australia to recycle TOMbag reusable garbage bags once they are no longer usable. For our customers, we will have an incentive program where offering store credit for returned bags.

Won’t my washing machine get stinky after washing a TOMbag reusable garbage bag in it?
Before you wash your TOMbag reusable garbage bag in the washing machine make sure that there are no garbage chunks left in it by properly tipping out the bag content into your main rubbish/recycling bin or hopper. You might want to wrap the wet garbage such as food scraps into an old newspaper which will protect the bag by absorbing any moisture. Many people are starting to use home composts for food scraps – even if you live in an apartment, you can share your compost with someone who needs it – you can download the app ShareWaste for that purpose. If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can also clean your washing machine drum and its insides by running a drum clean cycle after each time you wash TOMbag garbage bag.

Are bioplastic bags (including biodegradable and compostable) good for the environment?
No. Bioplastic bags are often marketed to consumers as good for the environment (a practice known as Greenwashing)

as they are biodegradable or compostable. But this is not often the case. For example, most bio-based plastics are produced from agricultural feedstock, requiring an estimated 600,000 hectares to produce 1.6 million tonnes of plastics in 2013 – a fraction of the total demand for plastics (<0.5% of the 2015 total). Increasing land use for bio-based plastics could bring about competition with agriculture, cause biodiversity loss and raise land rights concerns, as well as have negative climate consequences.

How long do TOMbag reusable garbage bags last?
Your new TOMbag reusable bin liner will last at least 12 months or longer provided you use the product as designed.

How do you clean them?

  1. If the inner lining isn’t too dirty, grab a soapy damp cloth and give it a quick wipe-down.
  2. Add some soapy water to your reusable garbage bag, give it a good shake, and pour out the water. Repeat until it’s squeaky clean. It’s like a mini-foam party!
  3. Machine Wash: TOMbag will love a spin in the washing machine every once in a while! Set it to a quick rinse (15 mins), and once it’s done, either let it air dry outside or simply wipe it down for immediate reuse.
  4. Important note: Keep your water cold or below 30 degrees when washing your TOMbag to prevent any potential damage and extend its life. The same goes for if you’re popping it in the dryer; keep it cool.

Wonderful solution to the trash bag!

I was so happy to find this bag because the compostable and biodegradable bags aren’t helpful in a landfill environment, leaving only plastic. I don’t like trash to sit in my house so I empty it everyday, and putting a plastic bag in the trash collection and storage system everyday felt awful. Thank you TOMbag - please keep it up!!
