The brand new Nomadic Cooling X3 Camper Van Air Conditioner from Nomadic Supply Company is a work of art and engineering. Like our prior generation of camper van air conditioners, the new Nomadic Cooling X³ Camper Van Air Conditioner is a stand-alone AC that does not need to be connected to the engine or to old-fashioned shore power to operate; providing the freedom of genuine off-grid living.

Our original air conditioner was one of the smallest on the market, but the Nomadic team envisioned an even smaller footprint. So a few prototypes later, we reduced the dimensions significantly and improved its performance by using a much quieter and longer-lasting brushless internal fan. The compressor has also been mounted on spring bushings to help with road and operational vibration and longevity.

The upgrades do not stop there, as the Nomadic Cooling X³ has an all-new intelligent LCD board. The Nomadic Cooling X³ has a sharper display to ensure better visibility even in direct sunlight. The entire MCB has been revamped with better electrical components, circuitry, and more intelligent operational logic. This translates to the compressor adapting considerably faster to freezing points, better error code detection, and speedier motor over-current, providing less supervision and downtime.

The Nomadic Cooling X3 24V Camper Van Air Conditioner installs onto your camper van roof the same way that old-fashioned RV air conditioners do, but is vastly more energy-efficient and can be powered by your lithium battery bank alone, rather than with fossil fuels! The Nomadic Cooling X3 Camper Van Air Conditioner uses less than half of the electricity of a traditional rooftop electric AC. Most rooftop air conditioners require 120-volt AC power to operate which requires your van to be permanently connected to shore power or a fossil-fuel generator, but Nomadic Cooling X3 Camper Van Air Conditioner uses only 12V or 24V DC power so it can run directly off your battery bank without an inverter!

Eco Mode should be the default operating mode on the Nomadic Cooling X3 Camper Van Air Conditioner. The powerful mode should only be used for short periods of time for maximum cooling, as the powerful mode has a higher consumption of energy.

As the outside air temperature increases, so do the demand for energy from the air conditioning unit. Nomadic Cooling tests our air conditioning units above 100F to determine maximum power consumption. Power consumption will be stated as follows: 12V @ 5/75 Amps

Example: Nomadic Cooling X3 24V Camper Van Air Conditioner will consume up to 75 Amps when the outside temperature is over 100F. However, when the external temperature decreases, so will the demand for energy. When designing your battery bank size energy consumption will fluctuate based on ambient temperature.

FIRE OR ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD:

  • Make sure there are no obstacles (wires, pipes, etc.) inside RVs [roof/floor/walls].
  • Shut OFF the gas supply
  • Disconnect 120 Vac power from RV
  • Disconnect the positive (+) DC terminal from the supply battery BEFORE drilling or cutting into RV. Failure to obey these warnings could result in death or serious injury.
  • Opening Requirements – Before preparing the ceiling opening, the type of system options MUST be decided upon.
  • Maintain structural integrity. Otherwise, damage to the product and/or RV could occur.
  • NEVER create a low spot on the RV roof. Otherwise, water will pool and could cause a leak.
  • Check inside the RV for return air grille (hereinafter referred to as “RAG”) obstructions (i.e. door openings, room dividers, curtains, ceiling fixtures, etc).
  • The opening created must be framed to provide adequate support and prevent air from being drawn from the roof cavity.
  • DO NOT cut roof structures or rafters
  • Good-Rafters Supported By Cross Beams
  • Frame opening so it won’t collapse when bolting down unit
  • Leave access to power supply wiring

Nomadic Cooling X3 Camper Van Air Conditioner Sizing:

The ability of an air conditioner to cool a vehicle or maintain a desired temperature is dependent on:

  • The heat gain of the vehicle
  • The physical size of the vehicle, and Window area
  • Quality and amount of insulation
  • Exposure to sunlight
  • Number of people inside the vehicle
  • Outside temperature

As a general rule, discharge air will be 15 – 20°F or 8 – 12°C cooler than the air entering the unit. For example, if the air entering the air conditioner is 80° F or 27° C. (return air), the supply air (dis- charge air) into the vehicle will be 60 – 65° F or 15 – 19 °C. As long as this temperature difference is 15 – 20 °F, or 8-12 °C is being maintained, the unit is operating properly.

Again, give careful consideration to the vehicle heat gain variables. During extreme outdoor temperatures, the heat gain of the vehicle may be reduced by:

  • Parking the vehicle in a shaded area
  • Keeping windows and doors closed
  • Avoiding the use of heat-producing appliances • Using window shades (blinds and/or curtains
  • For a more permanent solution to high heat gain situations, additional vehicle insulation, window awnings, and/or window glass tinting should be considered.

Nomadic Cooling X3 Camper Van Air Conditioner Placement:

This unit is specifically designed for installation on the roof of an RV. When determining your cooling requirements, the following should be considered:

  • Size of Vehicle
  • Window area (increases heat gain).
  • Amount of insulation in walls and roof.
  • Personal comfort level required.
  • Maintain structural integrity, otherwise, damage to product and/or RV could occur.
  • The roof must be designed to support 130 pounds when the vehicle is in motion. Normally a 200 lb. static load design will meet this requirement.

Energy usage explained

As the outside air temperature increases, so do the demand for energy from the air conditioning unit. Nomadic Cooling tests our air conditioning units above 100F to determine maximum power consumption.

Power consumption will be stated as follows: 12V @ 5/75 Amps

Example: This unit will consume up to 75 Amps when the outside temperature is over 100F. However, when the external temperature decreases, so will the demand for energy.

PLEASE REMEMBER: When designing your battery bank size energy consumption will fluctuate based on ambient temperature.

Are there any regular maintenance requirements?

Yes, it is advised to run your system a minimum of twice monthly, even during the winter months!

Type of refrigerant?

R134A automotive refrigerant is used in all Nomadic Cooling Air Conditioners. This makes it easy to repair, fill, or remove refrigerant anywhere in the world! Any traditional automotive air conditioner repair facility has the ability to fix, repair, and refill wherever you may be.

Where is the best location for a Nomadic Cooling air conditioner?

If you already have a 14×14 rooftop opening, please install the air conditioner in the corresponding space. If you are adding a new unit, feel free to place it in the desired location. We recommend placement above the bed!

Choosing the right wire size for your new air conditioner?

Using the correct wire for your new air conditioner is essential! Use the chart (linked below) to determine the proper wire size for your application. Always use stranded insulated copper wire rather than solid strand wire for positive and negative connections.

*If installed in a traditional recreational vehicle, you cannot connect to existing household wires.

*When in doubt, use the next largest wire size.

*Typically, 2AWG is standard or 2x 4AWG if space is limited.

Correct air conditioning sizing?

The ability of an air conditioner to cool a vehicle or maintain a desired temperature depends on the vehicle’s heat gain: Physical size of the vehicle window, area quality, amount of insulation exposure to sunlight, number of people inside the car, and outside temperature. Generally, discharge air will be 15-20 degrees F or 8-12 degrees C more excellent than the air entering the unit.

For example, suppose the air entering the air conditioner is 80 degrees F or 27 degrees C (return air). In that case, the supply air (discharge air) into the vehicle will be 60-65 degrees F. or 15-19 degrees C. As long as this temperature difference is 15-20 degrees F, or 8-12 degrees C is being maintained, the unit is operating properly.

Again, give careful consideration to the vehicle heat gain variables. During extreme outdoor temperatures, the heat gain of the vehicle may be reduced by: parking the car in a shaded area, keeping windows and doors closed, using window shades (blinds and/or curtains), and avoiding the use of heat-producing appliances. For a more permanent solution to high heat gain situations, additional vehicle insulation, window awnings, and/or window glass tinting should be considered.

Roof requirements?

A 14-1/4′′ x 14-1/4′′ (±1/2′′) square opening is required for installing this unit. Roof construction with rafters/joists supports frames on a minimum of 16-inch centers. Minimum of 2 inches and a maximum of 5 1/2 inches distance between the roof to the RV ceiling.

Choosing the proper location for the Nomadic Cooling X3 24V Camper Van Air Conditioner?

When determining your cooling requirements, the following should be considered: Size of RV, window area (increases heat gain), amount of insulation in walls and roof, the geographical location where the RV will be used, and personal comfort level required. The unit should be mounted slightly forward of the center (front to back) for one unit installation and centered from side to side. For two-unit installations, install one unit 1/3 and one unit 2/3’s from the front of the RV and centered from side to side.

Frost on the cooling coil?

Frost on a small portion of the cooling coil is not unusual. Under certain conditions, ice may form on the evaporator coil. This is indicated by very cold output at very low airspeed, and the icing can be seen through the air inlet hole with the filter removed. If this should occur, make sure air vents are open and not obstructed. AC units tend to frost when the outside temperature is relatively low. This may be prevented by adjusting the thermostat to a warmer setting. Should frosting continue, operate the unit on FAN ONLY setting until the cooling coil is free of frost; then resume regular operation.
